1.       What is the time frame for purchasing a bridal gown, a mother of the occasion gown, a brides maids dress, accessories?

  • The ideal time to purchase your bridal gown is 9 months before the date of your wedding to allow time for production and alterations.
  • Rush orders can most likely be accommodated at an additional fee.
  • If you’re short on time you can always purchase a sample gown to avoid the ordering process all together-  Check our sample sale page!
  • A Mother of the Occasion gown should be purchased a minimum of 5 months  before the wedding date to allow time for production and alterations.

  • Bridesmaids dresses should be purchased at least 6 months before the wedding date to allow time for production and alterations. For more details on ordering dresses for a bridal party, take a look at our attendants ordering page.

  • Accessories (shoes, veil, jewels, etc.)  should be ordered at least a month before the date of the wedding.

2.      What is a trunk show?

  • During a trunk show one designer lends us samples from their collection to allow our brides to see the full breadth of their collection.
  • The designer or a company representative is usually on hand to aid you in the selection of the perfect look for you.
  • As an incentive to purchase at the trunk show, brides are offered a discount off of the original price of the gown or accessory.
  • Be sure to check The Blushing Blog frequently for news about upcoming trunk shows and other great events!

3.      Whats’ to expect at a sample sale?

  • The White Dress by the shore organizes two sample sales per year although samples are available year round. Check our sample sale page!
  • During a sample sale all the gowns are available for purchase “off the rack”.
  • The advantage of purchasing during a sample sale is that you save 10% off the already discounted prices.
  • Please read our Sample Sale Guidlines which further explain what to expect during one of these events.

4.      Can I purchase a gown from you if you don’t carry the designer?

  • Gowns and accessories can only be purchased from the collections we currently carry. For a full list of these collections please visit the collections portion of our website.

5. How does bridal sizing differ from my normal dress size?

  • Your ‘bridal’ size may differ 1-2 sizes up from your normal dress size. While this may not seem to make much sense, dont worry, it is just industry standard.
  • For example, if you normally wear a size 6 you may wear a bridal size 8 or 10.
  • When purchasing your gown the size ordered will be reflective of your largest measurement- this is to ensure that we have a great fit in that area; your gown will be sculpted to fit your body during your alterations.

6.      How do I purchase a gown if I don’t fit into the sample in the store?

  • We usually sample our gowns in bridal size 8-12.
  • With that said, we do have a variety of gorgeous gowns in sizes 16-20 as well as some smaller sizes.
  • Keep in mind that when trying on these gowns you are mostly likely not trying on the size you will order- this requires a bit of vision but believe us, we have a few tricks of the trade.

Pretty Post

The lovely wedding of our bride Leigh and her partner Kelsey was recently featured on Bliss Celebrations blog and is our newest Pretty Post!

As stated on Bliss’ blog, “Leigh and Kelsey were married this June on a splendid Newport afternoon.  Their sweet whimsical wedding details made their day truly personal.  Lovebird details like the escort card tree and cake topper were sweeter than sweet, and the bright orange blossoms popped against the vibrant green hues. And the best part was that they were created by the brides themselves!   Belle Mer was the perfect place for the two to say I do in their afternoon luncheon wedding.  Event Design by Jubilee Events was perfectly paired with floral design by Datura, A Modern Garden and all of the fabulous details were captured by Carla Ten Eyck.  The dresses the girls chose were so perfect for their lawn wedding:  the amazing Nicole Miller gown from The White Dress By The Shore for Leigh and Kelsey’s dress was self-designed and created by Lydia Colombo.  Such a creative and beautiful duo.  Congrats!”

Ask The Experts ~ Hana Floral Design and Boutique

Today we are taking a different twist on our Ask the Experts Series!  We are re-posting an interview that Anna Lathrop of Gourmet Galley did with Yumiko Fletcher, founder of Hana Floral Design.  These are two of our favorite vendors! We are honored to be able to share their perspective with you.

Keep an eye on our blog in the coming weeks as we turn the tables and  conduct an interview with Anna!

Did you always know that you wanted to be a professional florist?
Nope! I started out aspiring to be an opera singer!!! I went to college for Vocal Performance at the Benjamin T Rome School of Music at Catholic U.  (Washington DC)

How did you get into the business?
Actually, a tragedy caused me to switch gears in life. My mom passed away unexpectedly in early 2001 and it made me re-think of my goals in life. It really was the catalyst for change and got me back into a creative field. I took some time off and a few months later, took a job in a flower shop!

How long have you been in business and how did your current venture start?
Hana has been in business since 2004. Prior to that, I had worked for a short time with a partner under a different name, and two years of working at flower shops before that.

Love note from TWD: we started the same year as Hana and have been friends ever since!

What is your favorite type of couple and venue to work with?
Well, I really love a bride who loves us!  That’s the best. And that bride is usually detail oriented but still somewhat laid back and has a combo of “classic/vintage/modern” taste.   They are willing to trust us to create something fabulous for them!

As far as venue~ We love going to new places, we like to travel but we also adore our local venues, like Saltwater Farm, Eolia Mansion, J Edwards, and one of my personal faves is Elihu Island in Stonington.

What’s your favorite moment of a wedding to design florals for?
Definitely the bridal bouquet and bouquets in general. Handing my bride her bouquet is the moment for me usually. The reaction says it all and makes my day.

Favorite Non-Wedding Floral Occasion/Arrangement?
Here at Hana, we make gorgeous holiday wreaths! They are hand clamped, which means we mix the greens, not just use a pre-made wreath and decorate it. I love the holidays as far as florals go but it’s still second to weddings!

Love note from TWD: We can attest to the beauty of Hana’s holiday florals! We have been fortunate enough to have them grace our boutique in the past.

How would you describe your creative process?
I usually meet the bride personally and we go through the entire wedding so I can get as many details down as possible.  I love to see the dress she picked as well as anything else involved ~ linens, maid’s dresses, any ideas that tell the whole story. Then I draw up a detailed proposal, maybe make a sample centerpiece and then I get going on ordering! We try not to do anything exactly the same even if a bride loves something we’ve already done.

What are the three flowers that you would say best describes yourself and your style?
Oh coral charm peony for sure, possibly the phaleonopsis orchid for a little ‘exotic’ and I just love gardenias for their classic beauty and the most amazing scent.
