Ask Beth: Ball Gown or Fit to Flare?| Convertible Wedding Dress
As an extension of our “Ask the Experts” blog series, we have created a new blog category called “Ask Beth”. The White Dress by the shore owner and stylist, Beth Chapman will answer any wedding fashion related questions you may have.
For our third installment of this series we choose to answer a question that is quite common amongst the modern bride relating to choosing between two shapes of gowns.
“Dear Beth,
I can’t decide between a classic A-Line style (that I know my family will love) and a sleeker fit to flare style (that I know my fiancé will adore), which one should I choose?! Thank you for your help! -Lauren”
Here is Beth’s response:
“Lauren,
Why not wear both!? Now, I don’t necessarily mean choosing two separate gowns, but rather utilizing the addition of a detachable tulle skirt. Below we have paired a handful of beautiful fitted styles from Connecticut based designer, Modern Trousseau with the separate tulle skirt from the same designer. With the addition of the skirt, the look is totally transformed. As the skirt is tulle, it pairs beautifully with so many different fabrications. Whether you want lace, beading or another interesting texture, this simple addition makes your look only that much more stunning. Modern Trousseau- Connecticut based couture for brides and moms
The French word, “couture” has become synonymous with luxury, particularly in the wedding industry. The real meaning of couture is, “the creation of exclusive custom-fitted clothing. Haute couture is made to order for a specific customer, and it is usually made from high-quality, expensive fabric and sewn with extreme attention to detail and finished by the most experienced and capable seamstresses, often using time-consuming, hand-executed techniques.” We are fortunate to have a true couturier, Modern Trousseau , right here in Connecticut.
We were honored to be the first boutique to ever carry the Modern Trousseau label and to be the exclusive retailer of the designer in Connecticut. Modern Trousseau provides our clients a true couture experience. As they are local, our clients (both brides and mothers) are able to work with designer, Callie Tein and her head pattern maker to create a custom, couture gown to fit their body. We are thrilled to be first store to ever carry the Modern Trousseau brand. The line, which epitomizes classic elegance, was launched in our boutique 6 years ago. We adore everything about it, but most importantly, the fact that it is designed and manufactured here, in our home state. Read on for more background information on this fabulous designer.
CALLIE TEIN | DESIGNER
Callie has been in love with fashion since her days as a young girl growing up in Melbourne, Australia. Her favorite game of dress-up involved pulling out her Mum’s sixties- and seventies-era evening clothes, and modeling her favorite ensembles. She has marked important or special events in her life through the evolution of her wardrobe — from her first pair of high heels, her first ballgown, prom dress, and — of course — her wedding gown.
An appreciation for the impact fashion makes on our lives inspired Callie to study Fashion Design at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. And she loved every minute of her time there. Upon graduation, she honed her design skills in women’s and children’s wear for various Australian companies, eventually landing her a position designing wedding gowns. Callie discovered she had a special talent for creating memorable gowns, and fell in love with bridal design.
Modern Trousseau’s couture designs are the ultimate in creativity and construction. Callie loves the luxury of working with fine French and Italian laces, imported silks, and delicate beadwork, and takes great care in selecting the fabrics that bring her 2-dimensional sketches to life. When the perfect fabric cannot be located, Callie will design the intricate lace patterns and unique beadwork for production in the finest ateliers.
Nothing less than perfect is the standard Callie Tein sets for the Modern Trousseau line of bridal gowns and mother of the occasion dresses. This originates from her belief that one’s wedding day is one of the most special days of a woman’s life, and the bride should remember herself looking and feeling gorgeous. Ultimately, a Modern Trousseau gown by Callie Tein is a one-of-a-kind, wearable works of art created to mark that very special moment when a woman becomes a bride.

It is so wonderful to know that your gown has come from a local space full of people with enormous talent and who love what they do. We love that these images evoke that sense of love and highlight the craftsmanship and attention to detail that each gown receives.
