When should you start shopping for your wedding dress? And how far in advance of your wedding should you actually purchase your gown? These are some of the most common questions we hear from brides at The White Dress by the Shore, our bridal boutique in Clinton, Connecticut. The answer might surprise you because when you should buy your wedding dress really depends on how you plan to shop.

Whether you're dreaming of a made-to-order designer wedding gown or considering an off-the-rack wedding dress that you can take home the same day, understanding the different bridal shopping timelines can make the entire process feel so much easier.

Ahead, we're breaking down when to buy your wedding dress, how long designer wedding gowns take to arrive, and why alterations are an important part of your wedding dress shopping timeline, no matter which shopping experience you choose.

How Far in Advance Should You Buy Your Wedding Dress?

One of the first things brides should understand about wedding dress shopping is that there isn't one timeline that works for everyone. The amount of time you'll need depends on whether your gown is being ordered from a designer or is already available to purchase at a bridal boutique.

For brides ordering a new designer wedding dress, we generally recommend purchasing your gown 10 to 12 months before your wedding. This allows time for production, shipping, and the alterations needed before your wedding day.

For brides shopping off-the-rack, the timeline can be much shorter because the wedding dress is already available to take home. Ideally, we recommend purchasing an off-the-rack wedding dress about four to six months before your wedding, giving you time to arrange alterations and prepare your gown.

Of course, these are recommendations, not absolute deadlines. Every bridal dress designer, wedding dress, and seamstress has different timelines, which is why planning ahead and communicating with your bridal stylist is so important.

When Should You Buy a Made-to-Order Wedding Dress?

If you're planning to order a new designer wedding dress, we recommend beginning your bridal shopping experience early enough to purchase your gown approximately 10 to 12 months before your wedding date.

When you say "yes" to a made-to-order wedding dress, the boutique places an order with the designer for your selected gown and size. Unlike purchasing an off-the-rack dress, you're not taking home the sample you tried on during your appointment. Instead, a new gown is ordered specifically for you.

Depending on the bridal designer, production and delivery can take several months, sometimes up to seven months. Customizations or special design requests may also require additional production time.

And remember, once your wedding dress arrives at the boutique, you'll still need to schedule alterations to ensure it fits beautifully for your wedding day.

This is why we encourage brides planning traditional designer wedding dress orders to begin shopping well before their wedding date. Giving yourself enough time allows you to explore different bridal designers, enjoy the experience, and make your decision without feeling rushed.

When Should You Buy an Off-the-Rack Wedding Dress?

If you're getting married on a shorter timeline, shopping for an off-the-rack wedding dress can give you much more flexibility.

An off-the-rack wedding dress is a gown that's already available at the bridal boutique and ready for immediate purchase. These dresses may include designer samples, discontinued styles, or other wedding gowns that are already in stock.

Instead of ordering a new wedding dress and waiting months for production, you purchase the actual gown you try on and can take it home that same day.

For brides choosing this option, we recommend shopping approximately four to six months before the wedding, when possible. This gives you time to work with a bridal seamstress on alterations and make sure your gown is ready for your celebration.

Here at The White Dress by the Shore, our TWD Off-the-Rack experience was created for brides who want a more flexible wedding dress shopping experience. Brides can explore our curated collection of designer wedding dresses in our private carriage house while receiving the personalized guidance and styling support our boutique is known for.

And if your wedding is less than four months away? Don't assume you've missed your opportunity to find a beautiful designer wedding dress. Off-the-rack shopping may still be an option, depending on the availability of a gown that works for you and a seamstress who can complete any necessary alterations.

Don't Forget To Plan Ahead for Wedding Dress Alterations

Here's something we always remind our brides: just because your wedding dress is ready doesn't necessarily mean your seamstress is.

Wedding dress alterations are a separate part of the bridal shopping process, and they're important whether you purchase a made-to-order wedding gown or an off-the-rack dress.

Most wedding dresses require some level of alterations to achieve the right fit. This might include adjusting the bodice, shortening the hem, changing the straps, or adding a bustle.

Depending on the gown and the changes needed, you may also need several fittings before your wedding day.

Bridal seamstresses often book appointments months in advance, especially during popular wedding seasons. In some cases, their schedules can begin filling up as much as a year ahead.

For this reason, we recommend reaching out to a bridal seamstress as early as possible, even if you haven't purchased your wedding dress yet. Understanding their availability can help you plan your bridal shopping timeline and avoid unnecessary stress later.

At The White Dress by the Shore, we don't provide alterations in-house, but we're happy to share our trusted list of experienced bridal seamstresses with our brides.

Can You Buy a Wedding Dress Less Than Six Months Before Your Wedding?

If you're short on time you can absolutely still buy a wedding dress with less than six months to go before your wedding!

While traditional made-to-order wedding dress timelines may be more challenging when your wedding is only a few months away, you still have options.

Off-the-rack wedding dresses are particularly helpful for brides planning shorter engagements, destination weddings, courthouse ceremonies, or celebrations that have come together more quickly than expected.

Because the gown is already available, there's no need to wait for a designer to produce and ship your wedding dress.

The important thing to remember is that immediate availability doesn't eliminate the need for alterations. Before purchasing your gown, talk with your bridal stylist about its fit and connect with a seamstress to make sure any necessary changes can be completed before your wedding.

Is It Better To Order a Wedding Dress or Buy One Off-the-Rack?

There's no right or wrong answer when it comes to choosing between a made-to-order wedding dress and an off-the-rack gown. Both offer wonderful options for brides, and the best choice depends on your wedding date, personal style, and what you're hoping to find during your bridal shopping experience.

For brides who have plenty of time before their wedding and want to explore special-order designer collections or customization options, made-to-order wedding dress shopping may be the perfect fit.

For brides who want to take home their wedding dress sooner, are planning a shorter engagement, or love the idea of discovering an existing designer sample gown, off-the-rack shopping offers a beautiful alternative.

At The White Dress by the Shore, we love that brides now have different ways to shop for their wedding dresses while still enjoying a thoughtful, personalized boutique experience.
